Threadripper CPUs
AMD’s Threadripper CPUs, particularly the Threadripper Pro 5995WX and 5975WX, are known for their exceptional performance in threaded workloads. They offer unmatched performance in multi-threaded tasks due to their high core counts and connectivity features, such as 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 and octo-channel memory.
In comparison to other CPUs, including AMD’s own Ryzen 9 series, Threadrippers generally provide better multi-core performance and support for a larger amount of memory, up to 2 TB. However, they are also known for their higher price point and power consumption.
For gaming and single-threaded applications, a high-end Ryzen 9 CPU might still outperform a Threadripper, especially in terms of frames per second (FPS) performance. But for professional workstations that require heavy multi-threading, such as video editing, 3D rendering, and scientific computations, Threadripper CPUs are hard to beat.
In comparison
The Intel Core i9-7980XE CPU, known for its high performance, has a number of pros and cons:
Pros:
- Fastest overall workstation performance available, especially for compression tasks.
- Extremely easy to overclock, enhancing its performance further.
- Decent wattage efficiency at stock, meaning it doesn’t consume excessive power under normal conditions.
- 36 computing threads make it ideal for extreme multitasking or very serious video editing.
- The least-expensive Core X motherboards are cheaper than ones for competing AMD Threadripper platform.
Cons:
- Terrible value compared to AMD’s Threadripper chips, as it is significantly more expensive.
- Requires seriously powerful CPU coolers due to high heat output, especially when overclocked.
- Wattage spirals when overclocked, leading to high power consumption.
- Extremely expensive, making it less accessible for the average consumer.
- Not substantially speedier, in many instances, than AMD’s 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which costs half as much.
It’s an excellent choice for clients who need to do serious multitasking, streaming, or video editing.
