Data Center Infrastructure – Should Know Information

Today’s data center can host millions of websites from around the globe, from web hosting providers that offer Shared, Virtual Private and Dedicated Servers to Cloud Hosting services. The common denominator between these services are the data centers they’re located in, thousands of them scattered here and there – some underground, some in major downtown areas and others in remote locations.

Relative Cost

Many of these data centers cost millions of dollars to build and an awful lot of money to maintain. When you see a dedicated server on sale in a web hosting forum for under $50, think about what it takes for a provider to bring that offer to the table AND remain financially solvent.

How this relates to businesses that just want a presence online

Data centers that are profitable and publicly traded didn’t get that way overnight. When you’re talking about managing hundreds of millions in assets and sometimes more than 100,000 business accounts, what does that translate to in terms of businesses that just want an online presence so that they can compete?

Data Center Infrastructure

Some data centers have power feeds from one source while others have dual feeds from separate substations for redundancy. If your online business stands to lose sales and customers if your site goes down due to a power failure, selecting a provider based on their power infrastructure can be critical.

Toward that end, most data centers do have one or more diesel fuel generators should they lose power. The size of those generators is important as data centers require robust power for system reliability. Onsite fuel reserves are critical as well, should they face prolonged power outages.

Other Data Center Controls and Systems:

  • Dedicated humidity controls
  • Advanced temperature systems
  • Cooling systems to prevent high heat loads
  • Onsite 24/7 third party security surveillance
  • State-of-the-art bio-metric retina scanning
  • Bullet proof glass at man-trap entry points
  • Weight measurement technology to prevent unauthorized entry into the data center

What about other network redundancies?

Look for redundancy in border routers, core routers, peers and firewalls. There should be no single points of failure.

Ask about whether they have multiple Tier 1 connectivity providers with redundant connections and whether those are 100Mbps, 1 GigE or 20 GigE connections. The faster the connection, the more superior your level of throughput and uptime.

What about DDoS protection?

DDoS attacks are so prevalent in 2016 that some form of protection is recommended. Not only are single websites being targeted, large scale attacks can take down entire data centers.

What about compliance requirements?

Is your data center PCI compliant? Do they have any certifications like SSAE 16? Are they SOX compliant?

How well is your data center staffed?

I’m not just talking about the number of staff employed by the data center, but by their level of expertise in managing servers, routers and the such.

And just as important, how qualified are their support staff in dealing with clients’ issues? Do they offer 24/7/365 support? Do their sales staff and level 2/3 support staff only work normal business hours? Do they have a pre-defined call list in case of emergencies? Do they offer live phone support?

Think of your data center as your partner in business

They’re there to ensure your business success for years down the road. Take some time to get to know something about their infrastructure and how you can help each other to grow your businesses.
