Is AIOSEO or Yoast the better SEO plugin for WordPress

In this article, we’ll discuss the features, pros and cons of AIOSEO and Yoast (including pricing), and then let you decide which better matches your specific hosting requirements, be that blog hosting, SEO hosting or WordPress hosting.

When we say better, we’re referring to how easy it is to set up and manage, how the plugin follows SEO guidelines to outrank its competitors in SERPS (search engine results pages) and how powerful it is relative to its price.

Both AIOSEO and Yoast are comprehensive SEO plugins that are feature rich. Each of them will help you optimize your website for Google and other search engines following best practices for search engine optimization.

Let’s start with AIOSEO

All in One SEO first came on the scene fifteen years ago (2007) and since then over three million website owners have used this plugin to optimize their websites for the search engines. Over the years, it kept up-to-date with best SEO practices and that’s important because SEO guidelines keep changing. What worked yesterday won’t necessarily work today.

It was purchased and completely revamped in 2020 by Syed Balkhi. One of its greatest strengths today is its ease of setup. Simply install the plugin and you’ll be taken to a set up wizard that even beginners can configure without the help of an SEO expert, and this can be accomplished in under 15 minutes.

AIOSEO Score

One of the features that I love about AIOSEO is that you can optimize every page and post prior to posting it. An All in One Score is posted in the top right hand corner of the page that displays how SEO compliant your content is. And it doesn’t end there – by clicking on the score it’ll take you to recommendations on how to improve that score. Once the score turns green, that’s good (kind of like money in the bank).

Value-Add Content

Google has repeatedly said to rank better, that you should write content for your visitors and NOT for the search engines. AIOSEO took the hint and now analyzes content in real time, and then recommends improvements. What does it check? It examines keyword density, title length, content length, internal and external links, and meta descriptions. It also looks at readability, analyzes passive voice, Flesch reading scores, usage of images and videos, and paragraph length. Personally, I disagree with the Flesch scores as that’s too generalized. In the web hosting industry, content is often more technical and complex.

Up Next is Yoast

Yoast claims to be the Number One SEO plugin for WordPress. What does it do? Like AIOSEO, Yoast SEO ensures your website meets best SEO standards. It gives you similar tools to optimize your content for the search engines. It also has an immensely user-friendly interface.

Features and Integrations

Yoast helps manage title tags, meta descriptions, improves readability (very important), minimizes duplication AND it integrates with Schema. I do love how the premium edition automatically creates redirects when revising permalinks (something a lot of other redirect plugins do NOT do).

Yoast SEO Premium allows you to set up to 5 focus keywords, but the search results should be nearly identical (same search intent). Remember to research both your primary and secondary keyword so you know they’re being searched. Optimizing for keywords that are NEVER searched will NOT help.

Social Media Integration

I love how Yoast shows you how a page/post displays when shared on Facebook and Twitter. In Yoast’s social settings, simply enable Facebook Open Graph meta data and Twitter’s card meta data. Your shares there will inspire retweets spreading like fire in a scorching hot day in South California.

Duplicate content

Yoast doesn’t actually check for duplicate content, rather allows you set a canonical URL if you have two URLs that display identical content (not common).

Pricing

Yoast SEO: the #1 WordPress SEO plugin:  $99 / per year (ex. VAT)

Yoast Local SEO plugin: $79 / per year (ex. VAT)

Yoast News SEO plugin: $79 / per year (ex. VAT)

Conclusion

Which is better, Yoast or AIOSEO, depends on your specific hosting and SEO requirements. Both are outstanding plugins. At the end-of-the-day, millions of their clients enjoy higher rankings on the search engines and improved organic traffic to their websites, which in turn leads to more time on site, reduced bounce times and increased conversions. We use AIOSEO.
